The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) is offering Internship opportunities to suitably qualified and unemployed graduates. The Interships will run for a a period NOT exceeding eighteen (18) months. 

 

Interns will be required to sign an internship agreement, in additional to an employment contract, committing themselves to full participation in the educational and workplace assignments in accordance with laid-down policies and procedures.

 

Stipend: R10 109,86 pm (Basic Salary, no benefits)

Duration: 18 months contract

Internship: Governance, Risk Management & Compliance

Department: Community Development

Reference No / Circular: 032/2025

Requirements: Diploma or Degree in Public Management, Business Administration, or related field with a focus on Risk Management and/or Compliance.

Duties: To provide administrative and analytical support to the Business Management Support Directorate in the areas of governance, risk management, compliance monitoring, and performance reporting. The internship aims to expose the incumbent to municipal governance processes, strengthen analytical and coordination abilities, and contribute to maintaining transparent and ethical service delivery in line with Batho Pele Principles. Assist the Directorate with coordination of governance, risk and compliance documentation. Assist with collation and verification of performance evidence. Provide general office and meeting support. Contribute to communication and awareness activities. Support audit preparation and information management,

Internship: Liaison & Public Relations

Department: Community Development

Requirements: Diploma or Degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, or Public Relations

Duties: To provide administrative and creative support to the Business Management Support Directorate in implementing communication, branding, and public liaison activities that enhance departmental visibility, stakeholder engagement, and knowledge-sharing. The internship aims to expose the incumbent to municipal communication processes, equip them with experience in designing and publishing internal media products such as the departmental newsletter, and contribute to consistent and professional communication in line with City of Johannesburg branding and communication protocols. Assist with drafting and preparation of internal and external communication materials. Support the layout, design, and content compilation of the departmental quarterly newsletter.  Assist with public liaison, event communication, and programme documentation. Contribute to the preparation, publication, and analysis of content for departmental and directorate social-media pages. Provide administrative, coordination, and record-keeping support for communication, liaison, and stakeholder management.

Internship: Executive Directors Office

Department: Community Development

Requirements: Diploma or Degree in Public Administration, Office Management, or Secretarial Studies

Duties: To provide administrative, secretarial, and executive support to the Office of the Executive Director: Community Development. The intern will assist in maintaining efficient communication, record-keeping, meeting coordination, and diary management functions, thereby gaining practical exposure to executive level operations, governance protocols, and professional office management within a municipal environment. Assist with general office administration and frontline support. Assist with scheduling and logistics for the Executive Directors meetings. Assist with filing, retrieval and tracking of records. Support preparation and dissemination of routine communication. Assist with preparation for governance and management forums. Provide routine HR/office logistics support.

Knowledge and Skills: Computer literacy (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Good written and verbal communication. Professional presentation and interpersonal skills. Internship: Transport Systems Management

Department: Transport

Requirements: Diploma or Degree in Diploma in Civil Engineering / Town and Regional Planning / Transport Management

Duties: The internships affords the interns an opportunity to gain skills in transport planning and development planning, and the implementation of transport policy/ regulations. Develop and manage strategies to improve the overall performance of the transportation system, which includes amongst others evaluation of traffic impact studies that will generate more than 1500 vehicle trips. Assist in the development of nodal transport plans in the CoJ. Implementation of the Security Access Restrictions Policy. Assist with the Stakeholder Consultation processes of projects / programs run by the unit.

Knowledge and Skills: Computer literacy (MS Office applications) and email. Organising skills and attention to detail. Excellent communication skills- verbal, listening and written. Time management; and Work under pressure. Knowledge of basic Traffic Engineering Theory; Development Planning. Knowledge of Technical Report writing.


Internship: Quality Control

Department: Transport

Reference No / Circular: 031/2025

Requirements: Diploma or Degree in Transportation Management / Logistics Management or any other related Quality Compliance qualifications

Duties: Manually record bus kilometers for Rea Vaya Phase 1A, Rea Vaya Phase 1B and Rea Vaya Phase 1C since BMCM is not yet in place. Monitoring and recording of daily operated bus kilometers. Identifying and capturing of miss trips.

Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of public transport operations. Ability to complete operations reports. Ability to project daily bus operations statistics and plan for future.


Internship: Integrated Planning, Policy and Research

Department: Community Development

Requirements: Diploma or Degree in Public Management, Development Studies, Political Studies or related field

Duties: Provide analytical, research, and coordination support to the integrated Planning, Policy and Research (IPPR) Directorate within the department of Community Development. Develop practical skills in policy strategic planning performance monitoring, and data analysis to enhance evidence- based decision- making. Contribute to the formulation and implementation of departmental policies and performance framework that support effective governance and service delivery across the department. Conduct research, reviews and analysis of policy, legislative and strategic documents. Assist in business planning and verification and performance for departmental and City scorecards. Support facilitation, documentation and analysis of stakeholder inputs for policy and planning processes. Support collection, analysis and presentation of policy and performance data for reporting and decision-making. Provide administrative, logistical and record keeping support for IPPR operation and governance compliance.

Knowledge and Skills: Competence in MS Excel and Power BI (or equivale3ent tools for data visualization). Research, data analysis and report- writing skills. Communication and presentation skills (oral and written). Organizational, administrative and coordination skills. Attention to detail and analytical reasoning. Application to Batho Pele Principles and professional ethics. Understanding of policy development cycles, research design, and evidence-based decision making. Familiarity with municipal governance framework, the Municipal Systems Act (MSA) and the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA). Basic understanding of performance management, SDBIP, and IDP alignment. Knowledge of stakeholder consultation, data analysis and presentation techniques.
